Pathways

Three training pathways

Notebook with pen — Pre-Core training Step 1

Pre-Core Training

A three-day introduction to ISTDP theory and technique, for qualified clinicians new to ISTDP who are considering whether to commit to Core Training.

  • 3 days · hybrid (in-person + online)
  • Didactic learning including with PowerPoint presentations
  • Video demonstration of ISTDP
  • Skill building exercises
  • Cohorts 20–25 · recommended before Core Training for those uncertain about committing to a three-year training, who only want some basic ISTDP skills, or who want to develop some basic skills pending commencing Core Training. It is not a prerequisite for Core Training.
  • Led by Julie Cochrane
Stacked books — Core training (3 years) Step 2

Core Training

Three years, four 3-day blocks per year. Monthly online group supervision. Didactic teaching covering 12 modules, using PowerPoints, video demonstration of ISTDP, skill building exercises, role plays, and the supervision of the work of participants.

  • 3 years · 4 × 3-day blocks per year · hybrid
  • Group supervision & video review
  • Cohorts capped at 10
  • Led by Julie Cochrane
Pen and paper — Advanced training Step 3

Advanced Training

For Core Training Graduates working at a higher level of ISTDP.

  • 3 years · 4 × 3-day blocks per year · hybrid
  • Requires the completion of a certified Core Training in ISTDP
  • Cohorts capped at 10
  • Led by Julie Cochrane (co-taught with Jon Frederickson and/or Johannes Ermagan)
Supervision

Ongoing supervision

Supervision runs alongside the trainings and continues well after them. It is video-based: you record your own sessions and bring them to supervision, so the work is looked at as it actually happened rather than as it is remembered.

It runs online, individually or in small groups, and is open to clinicians who have completed Pre-Core, an introductory workshop, Core or Advanced Training.

Supervision is also built into Core Training itself, which includes monthly online group supervision across the three years, alongside supervision of participants' own clinical work during each block.

Julie Cochrane is a board-approved supervisor and supervises mental health professionals in ISTDP in Australia, New Zealand and internationally.
