About Us: Origins of ISTDP Australia

Julie Cochrane is a clinical psychologist who co-founded ISTDP AUSTRALIA with psychologist Peter Watt, in 2010. She has been practising short-term dynamic psychotherapy for over 26 years and introduced ISTDP to Australia in 1999 with Australia’s first training in ISTDP with Dr Patricia Coughlin.

Julie Cochrane first discovered and began training in David Malan’s short-term dynamic psychotherapy before discovering ISTDP through Habib Davanloo’s book Unlocking the Unconscious, marking a significant change in the style and efficacy of her therapeutic work. In 1998, Julie began supervision with Dr Patricia Coughlin, the U.S.-based author of Intensive Short-term Dynamic Psychotherapy, Lives Transformed and Maximising Effectiveness in Dynamic Psychotherapy. Julie has since undertaken extensive further training in ISTDP, including further training with Dr Coughlin (including a three-year Core Training in ISTDP in Stockholm, Sweden), and with Dr Habib Davanloo, Jon Frederickson, Josette ten Have-de Labije, Allan Abbass, Kees Cornelissen and John Rathauser. She has completed Advanced Training in ISTDP, a three-year training program with Jon Frederickson, and Training of Teachers, a three and a half year training program with Jon Frederickson.

Julie’s trainings are certified by The ISTDP Institute and the International Experiential Dynamic Therapy Association (IEDTA).. She runs short courses, Core Trainings, and Advanced Trainings in ISTDP, offers individual and group supervision, and has private practices in Melbourne and Colac. Dynamic Psychotherapy, in Melbourne, has 28 therapists, most of whom are fully trained in ISTDP or in ISTDP training. She also teaches and supervises mental health professionals in ISTDP locally and internationally, including New Zealand, China, India, Iran, Israel, Lebanon, Malaysia, Portugal, and Turkey.

“Julie Cochrane is that rare therapist who combines presence, empathic attunement and active engagement with highly refined skills designed to assess and treat a wide variety of patients effectively and efficiently.   In addition to her superb clinical skills, she is a talented teacher and supervisor.   With her extensive training in Intensive Short Term Dynamic Psychotherapy, an empirically validated treatment for a wide variety of emotional and psychological disorders, she is at the forefront of the field. Whether you are a patient seeking treatment or a therapist searching for top notch training, you will be well served to contact Julie Cochrane.”
