Working with the client’s
highest capacity with ISTDP: on Depression

Friday 24 June 2022

6 pm to 12 am
in Melbourne/Sydney time

Welcome to this 1st part of a 2-part workshop (videotape case presentation included) with Julie Cochrane (and Johannes Ermagan, in the 2nd part) on ISTDP and the Graded Format.

On this day (1st part), Julie Cochrane will be showing how to work with patients in repression, where patients avoid mixed feelings by turning anger inwards and suffer symptoms such as depression, weepiness, and somatisation. We will see how to work at the patient’s threshold to restructure the regressive defences and build the capacity to experience mixed feelings without undue anxiety.

Julie Cochrane is a Clinical Psychologist who has trained extensively in ISTDP, introducing it to Australia and has taught and supervised therapists in Australia and internationally. She is the Director of Dynamic Psychotherapy in Melbourne Australia which has 26 therapists fully trained, or in training, in ISTDP.

Working with the client’s
highest capacity in ISTDP: on Fragility

Friday 01 July 2022

7 pm (Friday) to 2 am (Saturday)
in Melbourne/Sydney time

Welcome to the 2nd part of a 2-part workshop (videotape case presentation included) with Johannes Ermagan (and Julie Cochrane, in the 1st part) on ISTDP and the Graded Format.

On this day (2nd part), Johannes Ermagan will be showing the work done with fragile patients, where patients use splitting and projection as a primary system of resistance. He will highlight the importance of grading the interventions to work just below or around the threshold of anxiety tolerance. This is important so that patients don’t suffer from severe anxiety in the therapy and to create an understanding of the links between feelings, anxiety and defences and how they create the presenting symptoms.
