The structure of the first session: Getting off to a good start

This is a one-day training for new therapists, and those therapists with no previous experience of Intensive Short Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP), aimed at providing understanding and techniques for structuring a first session of psychotherapy.

We will cover:

  • Getting consensus on an emotional problem
  • Establishing and mobilise the patient’s will to engage in therapy
  • Getting consensus on how the patient’s problems operate in their lives
  • How to assess the patient’s capacity
  • Assessment of anxiety
  • How to regulate anxiety that goes over threshold
  • Getting consensus on the goals and tasks of therapy

This workshop will be taught by Julie Cochrane, Clinical Psychologist and Certified ISTDP Teacher and Supervisor.

Julie Cochrane is accredited by The ISTDP Institute and the International Experiential Dynamic Therapy Association (IEDTA) to teach and supervise ISTDP, having completed a 3.5-year course to teach and supervise
